Wild jamun fruits are also the treats of this season. It is dark purple to violet in color and it has a unique taste which can be described as astringent or pungent in English though it does not describe its taste well. I wonder why there are only four tastes according to the western world ( namely sweet, sour, bitter, salt ) and also many other parts of the world. For us in Tamilnadu there are six tastes and each one is specifically categorized to differentiate and are recognizable distinctly. Jamun can be said as thuvarppu (துவர்ப்பு). Other tastes are inippu(இனிப்பு), kaarppu(கார்ப்பு), uvarppu(உவர்ப்பு), kasappu(கசப்பு), pulippu(புளிப்பு). Will write a detailed post on the six tastes later..
